SALIMA MAWJI – DISMANTLING THE BARRIERS

BY J.M. LEE

Salima’s journey to leadership has been shaped by her deep commitment to making a difference and serving her community. Fundraising was the perfect fit for her, offering leadership opportunities and opportunities to create meaningful change.

“The most valuable lesson I’ve learned is the importance of having a strong support system. Success is rarely achieved alone. My father’s mentorship taught me the importance of emotional support in empowering others and building confidence. I also deeply admire those who have broken barriers while lifting others.”

One of the most vulnerable moments in her career was leading a healthcare fundraising team during the COVID-19 pandemic. The economic landscape was uncertain, but their foundation boldly decided to move forward with an ambitious fundraising campaign for mental health. “The most significant risk I’ve undertaken was pushing forward with this campaign at a time when many questioned whether it was even possible. Despite financial and logistical challenges, we achieved our goals.”

Leading through uncertainty strengthened her confidence. It showed her resilience and a personal and professional commitment to growth that can turn even the most daunting challenges into incredible opportunities. “Thus, I prioritize alignment—both in skillset and experience—to ensure I am the right fit for my mentee’s growth. I also highly value authenticity and trust. A strong mentoring relationship is built on open communication and mutual respect.”

Through continuous professional development and a commitment to lifelong learning, she seeks opportunities to expand her knowledge and apply her experience in meaningful ways. Confidence becomes natural when one dedicates oneself to continuous growth and embraces challenges.

“Mentorship is essential. Leadership thrives when women foster an environment where other women feel supported and are encouraged to grow. When women lift each other, we all rise together. By the same token, when we lead with passion, courage, and willingness to take risks, we elevate ourselves and inspire those around us. Resilience is important because challenges are inevitable, and so is ambiguity. These are crucial leadership skills for effective leadership.”

Salima leads by example, demonstrating values like integrity, collaboration, and a strong commitment to shared goals. She also strives to foster an environment where every team member feels empowered to contribute, take initiative, and grow.

“While it’s true that leadership dynamics can sometimes bring about resistance, especially for women, I view these moments as opportunities for growth and influence. And when you foster trust, respect, and collaboration, resistance tends to fade, and conflicts do not ensue.”

She makes self-care a priority in her daily routine. Traveling allows her to recharge, gain new perspectives, and refresh her creativity. She also makes time for yoga and regular exercise. “I also nurture my relationships,” she emphasizes. “Spending quality time with friends and family allows me to unwind and recharge.”

Prioritizing continuous learning and personal growth, Salima never stops expanding her skills and knowledge. She also needs to build and lean on a strong support network.

“Surround yourself with individuals who encourage your growth, challenge you to improve, and offer guidance when needed.” Not underestimating the power of her voice, she advocates for inclusive rights and equal opportunities for herself and other women.

For her, inclusion means actively dismantling barriers that prevent people from reaching their full potential. It’s about providing equal access to opportunities, fostering a sense of belonging, and ensuring that all voices are heard and valued. “As leaders, it’s our responsibility to advocate for inclusion and embody it through our actions and decisions.”

She is unwavering in her support and love; she couldn’t emphasize more the importance of kindness, patience, and resilience. “Be a constant source of encouragement; always believe in yourself, even when you have doubts. I’m so grateful for the wisdom, love, and foundation my mother instilled, giving me the foundation to go out into the world with confidence and empathy.”

Motherhood gave her a new perspective on life and love. “Before I had kids, I thought I knew what love was. What I feel for my children is a whole new kind of love: deep and unconditional.”

What she loves most about being a mother is the bond she shares with her children. “There’s something so beautiful and fulfilling about the little moments, like when they hug you or share something they’ve learned. I couldn’t be more thankful for the love, wisdom, and unwavering support my mother showed me, even when things were tough. I want her to know that everything she taught me, through her actions and words, has shaped the mother I am today.”
