Celebrating Cricket’s Diversity And Unity At LMS Canada Grand Finals

Vancouver, Canada – October 7, 2023 – The Last Man Stands (LMS) Canada, the Canadian version of the world’s largest amateur cricket league (Last Man Stands), recently hosted thrilling grand finals on August 21st, 2023, at Newton Athletic Park in Surrey. These exciting matches, featuring both the Cup and Plate finals, brought together cricket enthusiasts, community leaders, and dignitaries.

In a display of incredible talent and teamwork, the Surrey Scorpions claimed the Cup championship (Cup champions), while the Surrey Thunderwolves secured the Plate title by defeating the Vancouver Vikings and Burnaby Vikings, respectively. The presence of esteemed guests, including Surrey Mayor Brenda Locke and other local representatives, added prestige to the event.

What makes LMS Canada unique is not just the cricket, but also the support it offers newcomers. LMS Canada’s league managers and program officers have received training under Sport for Life, becoming mentors for newcomers. Their dedication has allowed over 80 newcomers to participate in cricket this year, promoting inclusivity and equity. This expansion demonstrates cricket’s potential as a unifying force and a valuable tool for integration in Canada.

These events have set the stage for another significant occasion. On September 29th, LMS Canada hosted the finals of the LMS BC EarlyRisers and the inaugural LMS Canadian University Cricket League (UCCL). The UCCL, featuring 14 teams, showcases the growing passion for cricket within Canadian universities. UBC Cricket Club triumphed over SFU Cricket Club in a thrilling match, highlighting the competitive spirit within Canadian universities. Additionally, Haryana Hurricanes secured victory against Delta Dragons, further emphasizing the league’s competitiveness.

These leagues and matches are part of LMS Canada DEI initiatives, led by Dr. Emrul Hasan, a distinguished UBC Professor of Economics, and the dedicated team of the Last Man Stands Canada DEI Foundation. Dr. Hasan’s vision extends beyond cricket; it’s about fostering integration, friendship, and personal growth. He emphasizes, “University leagues provide a unique platform for students and newcomers to connect, share experiences, and build lasting bonds.” Dr. Hasan underscores the broader impact of these leagues on the community, stating, “Cricket is a powerful tool for integrating newcomers and enhancing the physical and mental health of Canadians. With the support of the Canadian Parks and Recreation Association and the Government of Canada, we have enabled over 80 newcomers to play the game for free this year.”

In an exciting development, the top eight teams from these four leagues have qualified for the LMS World Championships in South Africa in 2023, 2024, and 2025, further elevating the global recognition of Canadian cricket talent.

As LMS Canada continues to grow, its focus remains on promoting inclusivity and corporate social responsibility. Future plans include leagues such as LMS Corporate League, LMS Women League, LMS Over 40 League, LMS DEI Indoor Cricket League, and LMS DEI Tape ball Cricket League, aligning cricket with mental health, diversity, ESG goals, and employee engagement.
