Sukh Dhaliwal Calls for Study on Local Police Force for Surrey

Sukh Dhaliwal has proposed all levels of government come together to look at a local policing model for Surrey.

Sukh Dhaliwal has released a letter that he sent to the federal Minister of Public Safety, Hon. Ralph Goodale, British Columbia’s Minister of Public Safety and Solicitor General, Hon. Mike Farnworth, and City of Surrey Mayor, Linda Hepner on June 20, 2018. The letter calls for a study looking at a local policing model for Surrey in partnership with the federal, provincial, and municipal governments.

In releasing the letter, Sukh Dhaliwal said that he is personally in support of moving towards a local police force for Surrey, and would like to see all orders of government come together and begin studying the process of moving towards a local policing model for Surrey, which would include examining resources, timelines, as well as the challenges and opportunities that will need to be taken into account.

Dhaliwal added “In recent weeks there has been a growing grassroots call for changes in how we keep our communities safe, and while we have taken several actions in the past two years, I understand more can be done. With a local police force, we can ensure that our police are accountable to the residents of Surrey and the needs of the residents are being met on a regular basis”

On Wednesday, July 11, 2018, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Public Safety, MP Mark Holland will be visiting Surrey for a series of meeting with elected officials, public safety experts, and stakeholders in order to hear first-hand the concerns, and ideas from the experts on how we can make our streets safer. MP Dhaliwal intends to raise his call for a study on a local policing model for Surrey directly with the Parliamentary Secretary, and the provincial and municipal counterparts in attendance at the meeting.

“By working together, from every level of government to every member of the community we can bring change that will save lives – this is our singular goal. Because enough is enough”
