Surrey, BC: In celebration of Canada’s National Takeout Day, the Downtown Surrey Business Improvement Association (DSBIA) – which represents over 1,400 businesses in Surrey’s downtown core – is urging the community to consider taking a break from meal prepping duties in favour of picking up a meal from their favourite restaurant.
The second annual National Takeout Day, taking place April 15, aims to help promote Canada’s foodservice industry and their takeout offerings, as establishments across the country continue to operate under ever-evolving COVID-19 public health and safety guidelines.
To support the initiative, the DSBIA is encouraging residents to consider grabbing a meal from a local restaurant directly, as an alternative to ordering from delivery services like SkipTheDishes or Uber Eats. With many businesses continuing to offset revenue losses from limited foot traffic and in-person dining opportunities, saving on the costs associated with providing these services is imperative to ensure they’re able to weather the storm long-term
“Downtown Surrey has always welcomed visitors to a vast selection of diverse dining options to take advantage of,” says DSBIA CEO Elizabeth Model. “As we continue to navigate our current challenge, Surrey’s local restaurant community is relying on our continued patronage more than ever before. Today, by picking up a drink, snack or your favourite dish for National Takeout Day, we can help support restaurants that already have a lot on their plates.”
With full health and safety guidelines in place, including enhanced physical distancing and sanitation practices, guests can pick up their meals in a safe and welcoming environment, while also ensuring that restaurants in their own backyard are able to carry on going forward.
To help commemorate the occasion, diners can upload their takeout receipts to the Canada Takeout (CTO) Takeout Tracker form at www.canadatakeout.com/april-15-takeout/, which aims to set a national record for the most takeout orders made in one day.
Celebrating the collective efforts of National Takeout Day aims to build upon the foundation of previously established DSBIA efforts that have been implemented to support the local economy, which include Explore the George, Open With Care, Click on Surrey and the Shop Local – Holiday Campaigns.
