Surrey, B.C. – Young leaders from across Surrey gathered at City Hall on Friday to share ideas, creativity and community action at the Surrey Steps Up Youth Showcase. The celebration featured interactive displays and presentations from 39 youth-led projects, including Artlift, a youth-led nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering and uplifting young artists through accessible, community-driven programming, and Storykeepers, a youth-led civic engagement initiative that connects generations by collecting and preserving stories from seniors in our community.
“Surrey has one of the largest youth populations in B.C.,” said Mayor Brenda Locke. “From innovative scientists to intergenerational storytellers, our youth are strengthening their schools, neighbourhoods and communities. On behalf of City Council, I would like to thank each participant for inspiring us all.”
A collaboration between the City of Surrey, Surrey Police Service, Surrey School District and a Surrey Steps Up Youth Planning Team, Surrey Steps Up is the marquee event of a larger initiative encouraging youth to take action and share ideas that shape their communities.
“It’s always a highlight to see youth across the city come together,” said Arielle Patterson, the City’s youth services functional manager. “I’m continually impressed by the high quality of submissions and the impact our youth are having. I’m honoured to celebrate these leaders of tomorrow.”
