Celebrate the Vibrancy of Asian Heritage Month at Vancouver Art Gallery

The Vancouver Art Gallery launches a month-long series of special events to honour Asian Heritage Month

April 30, 2024, VANCOUVER, BC // Traditional Coast Salish Lands including the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations.

The Vancouver Art Gallery is gearing up to celebrate Asian Heritage Month this May, with a rich array of programs and events that illuminate artistic innovation and diversity of expression. From artist talks, exhibition tours and workshops to poetry, music, and a party filled with electrifying performances, installations, DJ sets and more, the Gallery invites people of all cultures and backgrounds to explore the multifaceted aspects of Asian heritage through art.

“We are proud to honour Asian Heritage Month, and we hope to inspire discourse, understanding and appreciation for the compelling stories and experiences that contribute to our collective cultural heritage,” said Anthony Kiendl, CEO & Executive Director at the Vancouver Art Gallery.

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS

Art Party: Mark your calendars! On May 11 the Gallery’s much-anticipated Art Party returns for an unforgettable evening of art, music, drinks, live performances, DJ sets and more. Wear your most adventurous spring look and enjoy a visually spectacular evening, plus be among the first to see the much-anticipated exhibition Copy Machine Manifestos: Artists Who Make Zines. This late-night party will feature a range of performances by artists of Asian descent, including an interactive video installation by Chimerik 似不像; contemporary dance performances by OURO Collective; a performance and zine-making activity with Art Action Earwig; DJ sets by Nancy Lee and Paisley Eva and more.

Artist Talk with Janet Wang: Explore the intersections of identity, culture and visual storytelling in an enlightening discussion with featured SPOTLIGHT artist Janet Wang as she explores what it means to be Chinese in Canada.

Tours in Mandarin: Delve deeper into exhibitions with guided tours hosted by the Vancouver Art Gallery’s experienced Art Educators. There will also be Family Tours designed especially to engage visitors aged 5 to 12 years old and their families.

Kintsugi Workshop with Three Little Spruce: Discover Kintsugi, the traditional Japanese art of restoring broken pottery, in a hands-on workshop led by renowned instructor Yuka Morino of Three Little Spruce. Participants will have the opportunity to practice on ceramic fragments at different stages of Kintsugi and take home their resulting work.

Walang Hiya: A night of Filipinx poetry: Rounding off Asian Heritage Month is a special closing event featuring Filipinx Canadian spoken word poets. Hosted by Kimmortal, and with powerful performances from poets Tin Lorica, Ruthless, Winona Gillera, Karla Comanda, and a DJ set from Turtle Dreams, this event promises to be an unforgettable evening celebrating Filipinx culture through poetry and music.
