As the FIFA World Cup arrived in Vancouver, Granville Island quickly emerged as one of the city’s most vibrant gathering places. Throughout the five-week tournament, thousands of fans have flocked to the waterfront destination to watch matches on a giant 24-foot screen, transforming the island into a celebration of football, culture and community. With seating for up to 1,000 spectators, many match days have drawn packed crowds eager to share in the excitement.

I had the opportunity to emcee the opening celebrations on June 11, welcoming fans from around the world as they gathered to watch South Korea take on Czechia. The atmosphere was electric. Supporters draped in national colours filled the venue, while families, visitors and local residents connected through a shared love of the game.

Beyond the matches themselves, Granville Island created a true festival experience. Visitors enjoyed live DJs, cultural performers, food trucks, family activities, face painting and a lively waterfront atmosphere that reflected Vancouver’s diversity and creativity. Throughout the tournament, special programming has included Canada Day celebrations, live music, artisan demonstrations and performances connected to the Indian Summer Festival.

What struck me most was the sense of connection. Fans had travelled from across Canada and around the world to experience the tournament in Vancouver. Whether arriving by ferry, bicycle or transit, they brought an infectious energy that could be felt throughout Granville Island and the surrounding downtown core.

As the tournament continues, I look forward to returning to host the Canada Day festivities on July 1 and the closing celebrations on July 18 and 19, when football fans will once again come together to celebrate the bronze medal match and the World Cup Final. In a city known for its diversity, the Granville Island Watch Party has become a place where cultures meet, friendships form and the world’s game brings people together.
