The Dance Centre presents the Discover Dance! Series

The Dance Centre’s popular and long-running Discover Dance! noon series begins a new season with a performance by the Vancouver-based Bharatanatyam artist Sujit Vaidya. Known for working both within and beyond traditional Bharatanatyam, he will share a stimulating presentation of excerpts from dances passed down through the generations, as well as new creations, in a conversation between past and present, accompanied by live music from Curtis Andrews (Mridangam - drum), Arno Kamolika (Nattuvangam - cymbals), Sheema Balakrishnan (vocals) and Shriram Rajagopalan (violin). There will be an artist talkback after the show.

Sujit Vaidya is an independent Bharatanatyam artist based in Vancouver. He has performed extensively in Canada, the US, Europe and India. He has many solo presentations to his credit and has also performed with companies such as Co.ERASGA, Battery Opera, Shakti Dance Company, inDANCE in Toronto, Spilling Ink in Washington DC, Nava Dance in San Francisco, and Nrithyalakshana in Chennai, India. As a choreographer, he creates work that speaks from a deeply personal space. He finds it important and urgent to question the narrative and relevance of non-inclusive traditional ideas. Sujit was the first South Asian artist to receive the Vancouver City Mayor’s arts award for Best Emerging Dance Artist in 2010. He continues to pursue advanced training in the traditional form of bharata natyam with his Guru A Lakshman in Chennai, India. Sujit is a Dance Centre Artist-in-Residence for the 2025-2026 season.
