The Ismaili Centre Burnaby presents the 2019 Ismaili Centre Conversations, a series of 3 onstage conversations at the nexus of citizenship, identity and religion. Co-sponsored by Simon Fraser University, the conversations will be conducted by Dr. Amyn Sajoo, Scholar-in-Residence, SFU’s Centre for Comparative Muslim Studies, and feature 3 renowned speakers:
Rochelle Steiner – Saturday, March 9: The Art of Belonging
Rochelle Steiner is Chief Curator & Associate Director of the Vancouver Art Gallery. A leader in the visual arts for over 20 years, she was dean of the School of Art & Design at the University of Southern California from 2010 to 2012.
Catherine Dauvergne – Saturday, April 6: Migration in a Nativist Age
Prof. Dauvergne is dean of UBC’s Allard School of Law. Her books include Making People Illegal: What Globalization Means for Migration and Law (2008) and The New Politics of Immigration and the End of Settler Societies (2016).
Akber Mithani – Saturday, May 4: Life and Death: The Ethics of Identity
Dr. Mithani is Regional Medical Director for Fraser Health Residential Care-Assisted Living, and Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine at UBC. He has an extensive record of research & activism in end-of-life and palliative care
