Created by Julien-Robert and Julien Compagne, Alt-Escape invites audiences into a mesmerizing multi-sensory world. Alt-Escape is not a traditional concert or theatre show, it combines live electronic music, large-scale video projections, laser displays, interactive digital instruments, real-time visual effects, and experiments with gravity, physics, space, and time.
“Alt-Escape is unlike anything audiences have seen before. We created our own instruments using electronics, sensors and lasers, turning the stage itself into a visual and musical instrument. It’s a live performance where music, digital art and interactive visuals become one experience,” said Julien-Robert, co-creator of Video Phase.
The groundbreaking production emerged from a four-year artistic and technological journey. The artists designed and built many of the show’s unique tools themselves, combining music, programming, electronics, and digital art into a single creative language.
“We wanted to create something new, something that would make people dream. The show follows two characters travelling through separate universes who gradually discover each other, connect and ultimately come together. At its heart, Alt-Escape is an invitation to take a journey through imagination,” says Julien-Robert.
This full sensory experience delivers unexpected moments at every turn, leaving audiences inspired by what is possible when creativity and technology meet. There will be an afternoon show and an evening show at the Surrey Arts Centre, and the end of each performance includes an opportunity to meet the artists and discover how the magic happens. Julien-Robert said, “One of my favourite moments is watching audiences discover how the instruments work. After the performance, they can come on stage, interact with the technology, and see firsthand how music and visuals are created together.”
Video Phase has earned international recognition for its groundbreaking work, performing across North America and Asia. The duo’s acclaimed production Lumens received the 2018 Opus Prize for Best Electroacoustic Concert, while Alt-Escape was nominated in the same category in 2024. Beyond their live performances, Video Phase creates permanent digital installations and immersive experiences that transport audiences into fully multisensory worlds.
“I hope audiences leave in a state of wonder. I want them to feel fascinated, inspired, and transported somewhere unexpected, as though they’ve experienced a different way of seeing live art,” said Julien-Robert.
