British Columbia is blessed to experience the living legend of Indian Classical Music , the Mridangam Maestro SRI TRICHY SANKARAN , in concert with some of India’s leading musicians in a rare Carnatic Kutcheri (South Indian Classical Music Recital) . Vocalist SANDEEP NARAYAN hails from a musical family and acknowledged as one of India’s brightest vocalist after performing around the world for over 15 years . He’s supported by violinist V.V.S.MURARI ( son of esteemed violinist V.V.SUBRAMANIAM ) and K.V.GOPALAKRISHNAN on Kanjira (lizard skin tambourine) , one of South India’s finest Kanjira player.
Sri Trichy Sankaran is one of the greatest living performers of the Mridangam , the most important percussion instrument in South India . He has been a professional musician for nearly seven decades , has concertized around the globe and has engaged in cross-cultural perfoprmances and collaborations with musicians from numerous genres ranging from jazz to gamelan to African music to contemporary classical . Aside from being a performer , he is also an esteemed composer of intercultural music , an author of two acclaimed books and an educator of high repute, having taught at York University for over 40 years . He is also no stranger to the Canadian West Coast, as he was part of Expo’86 and then went on to teach throughout the 90’s at the SFU’s Summer Percussion Program. The Meastro collaborated in the last decade with the Vancouver Inter – Cultural Orchestra ( VICO ) and most recently , with the local world – jazz musician Curtis Andrews & his ensemble , The Offering Of Curtis Andrews.
Despite all of these visits to Vancouver , this is the first time that he’s performing in a classical context in British Columbia since 1981 and as such , this is a rare opportunity to see the world – renowned maestro in his element.
