Kavita Earns Michelin Bib Gourmand as Yash Shah Receives Michelin Outstanding Service Award
The dual recognition arrives days before Kavita’s first anniversary, following a year of national attention from Canada’s 100 Best, Vancouver Magazine and Air Canada’s Best New Restaurants

Vancouver, B.C. –  Just ten days before Kavita marks its first anniversary, the Vancouver restaurant has received two distinctions in the 2026 MICHELIN Guide Vancouver, earning a Bib Gourmand while Co-Founder and General Manager Yash Shah has received the MICHELIN Outstanding Service Award.

The Bib Gourmand recognizes restaurants MICHELIN inspectors identify for great food at a great value, while the Outstanding Service Award brings separate recognition to the hospitality that has developed around Kavita’s cooking.

For Chef and Co-Owner Tushar Tondvalkar and Shah, who have been best friends since kindergarten, the dual recognition is particularly personal. They spent years talking about the restaurant before Kavita existed and today lead two distinct parts of the experience now recognized by MICHELIN.

“To receive a Bib Gourmand in our first year is something I am incredibly proud of,” says Tondvalkar. “To be standing beside Yash while the hospitality he has built with our team is recognized at the same time makes it even more meaningful. We dreamed about this restaurant long before there was a Kavita, but what it has become belongs to the people who come through these doors every day, both our team and our guests.”

MICHELIN Guide inspectors praised Kavita for its regional Indian cooking, seasonal British Columbia ingredients, cocktails and hospitality, writing that “intriguing cocktails and disarmingly warm hospitality make the experience all the more appetizing.”

Tondvalkar opened Kavita with a deeply personal ambition to show more of the regional breadth of Indian cooking. Named for his late mother, Kavita, whose name also means poetry, the restaurant began as a tribute to her and to the food memories that shaped him. His own references begin with his upbringing in Mumbai and his family connection to coastal Malvan, while the menus look outward across regions, traditions and techniques from throughout India.

British Columbia shapes what can be cooked at any given moment, with seafood, produce and proteins finding their way into dishes grounded in Indian culinary traditions. Kavita moves between à la carte dining and Ammakase, its continually evolving chef-led tasting experience. “Amma” means mother, and the experience carries the same ideas of trust and care that run through the restaurant while giving the kitchen room to respond to season, ingredient and place.

The MICHELIN Outstanding Service Award recognizes another part of the restaurant Shah and Tondvalkar have built together. Shah leads Kavita’s dining room, operations and wine program, bringing an approach to hospitality shaped over years in Vancouver restaurants including Blue Water Cafe and Autostrada. Hospitality was not his original career plan. He came to Canada to study international business and public relations before restaurant work drew him increasingly into service, wine and the rhythm of the dining room.

His philosophy begins with something simple. Pay attention. Before service, the team looks at who is coming through the door, from returning guests and first-time diners to celebrations and dietary requirements. Once the room fills, responsibility does not stop at assigned tables. The expectation is that everyone notices, everyone responds and the mechanics of service remain largely invisible to the guest.

“We do not want hospitality to feel rehearsed,” says Shah. “Knowledge matters and standards matter, but neither means very much if you are not paying attention to the person in front of you. Some guests want every detail. Others want space. I want our team to understand that the whole room belongs to all of us. Receiving this award is deeply meaningful because it recognizes something our entire team works on every night.”

Bar Manager Kabir Sehgal extends that thinking into Kavita’s cocktail program, using regional Indian dishes, ingredients and memories as starting points for drinks that pair technique with a clear connection to the food.

The two MICHELIN distinctions arrive during a year that has steadily widened Kavita’s audience. The restaurant was ranked No. 96 on Canada’s 100 Best Restaurants  for 2026, received Gold for Best Indian and Silver for Best New Restaurant at the 2026 Vancouver Magazine Restaurant Awards and, in September, was named one of 30 finalists nationwide for Air Canada’s Best New Restaurants 2026, one of four Vancouver restaurants included this year.

As Kavita approaches its first anniversary, the recognition captures two sides of a restaurant becoming more confident in what it is, from the cooking Tondvalkar continues to develop to the hospitality Shah and the team are shaping around it.

“We are still learning what Kavita can be,” says Tondvalkar. “There are regions we have barely touched, ingredients we are still discovering and people we still want to cook with. To reach this point together in our first year gives us even more reason to keep going deeper.”

Kavita is one of 16 Bib Gourmand restaurants in the 2026 MICHELIN Guide Vancouver and one of just two new additions to the category this year. Shah was also named the recipient of the MICHELIN Outstanding Service Award, one of four Special Awards presented as part of the 2026 selection. In total, this year’s Guide includes 72 restaurants spanning 23 cuisine types.

About Kavita

Kavita is a 39-seat contemporary Indian restaurant in Vancouver from Chef and Co-Owner Tushar Tondvalkar and General Manager and Co-Owner Yash Shah, built around the regional diversity of India and the ingredients, seasons and culinary landscape of British Columbia. Named for Tondvalkar’s mother, Kavita, a name that also means poetry, the restaurant reflects his belief that food can hold memory, place and story at once.

Drawing from Tondvalkar’s upbringing between Mumbai and coastal Malvan while looking far beyond both, Kavita explores the many regions, traditions and food cultures that shape India. Menus change with the seasons and bring regional Indian techniques and traditions together with BC seafood, produce and proteins alongside carefully sourced Indian ingredients.

Tondvalkar’s culinary career spans more than a decade, including time in the kitchens of Gaggan and Gaa in Bangkok and Vancouver restaurants including Blue Water Cafe, Bauhaus and The Fish House in Stanley Park. Kavita offers à la carte dining alongside Ammakase, its evolving chef-led tasting experience, supported by thoughtful wine and cocktail programs.

Since opening in October 2025, Kavita has been ranked No. 96 on Canada’s 100 Best Restaurants for 2026, received Gold for Best Indian and Silver for Best New Restaurant at the 2026 Vancouver Magazine Restaurant Awards, and been named one of 30 finalists for Air Canada’s Best New Restaurants 2026. The restaurant continues to evolve through seasonal menus, collaborations and culinary programming that create space to explore regional Indian food, culture and hospitality in greater depth.
