It will be a battle of one versus two to decide the Junior Boys Basketball Invitational Tournament.
The top two seeds of the 32-team tournament at Langley Events Centre won their respective semi-final games on Monday, setting up a showdown as Argyle looks for the program’s first Junior Boys title in school history while the Celtics seek a second title in the last four tournaments. They also have a second (2024) and third-place finish in that span.
Argyle Pipers 62 Lord Tweedsmuir Panthers 48
With their lead down to eight points in the fourth quarter, the Argyle Pipers sealed it from the free throw line, scoring their last seven points from the charity stripe, earning a spot in the championship final for the first time since 1980 as the North Vancouver school looks to secure their first Junior Boys championship title in school history.
Ilia Maydan earned Player of the Game honours following his 19-point outing with Logan Szpak – the lone Grade 9 on the roster – chipped in with 13 for the tournament’s top seed.
The Panthers – the tournament’s fourth seed – received 20 points from Gurtaj Hayer with Jaideep Athwal adding 10.
St. Patrick Celtics 68 Terry Fox Ravens 62
A monster game from Jericho Labrador – the Grade 10 guard scored 28 points – has the St. Patrick Celtics back in the championship final for a second straight year following a 68-62 win over the Terry Fox Ravens.
After the Ravens cut the deficit to a single point late in the contest, the Celtics came up with a clutch steal and lay-in from Labrador, extending the lead to three before icing the game from the free throw line. Aside from Labrador’s big game, Dhyne Cotin had 20 points and Dion Gonzales chipped in with 14, which included four 3’s.
Terry Fox was led by Joel Pelland’s 20 points plus 16 apiece from Ricky Adam and Robbi Felipe.
