Langley, BC (April 16, 2025)Compass Cohousing, a unique collaborative residential project in the Township of Langley, held their groundbreaking ceremony today to celebrate the start of construction.

Currently being built by Lark Group with designs by Ankenman Marchand Architects, Compass Cohousing is a planned 40-unit, 46,172 square-foot collaborative residential project located at 6644 – 203 Street, Langley, that features condo and townhouse units plus thoughtfully designed shared common facilities and amenity spaces meant to enhance residents’ living experiences. Unlike co-op housing, each cohousing community member owns their home as part of a strata, like any other condo or townhouse strata, but have access to these shared common spaces.

“The cohousing concept began in Denmark in the 1960s and has been steadily gaining popularity across Europe and North America ever since,” explains John Frederickson, one of the directors of Compass Cohousing Ltd. “We’re thrilled to be bringing Compass Cohousing to life. It’s a place where people of all ages come together to live in the heart of a community, forming a vibrant, modern village nestled in the heart of Langley. Our youngest member, Luna, is just 18 months old, while our oldest member is in their eighties.”

“Cohousing is designed to help build strong relationships—community is built right into the architecture, encouraging connection and mutual support. Children grow up with greater confidence, parents benefit from a supportive environment, and seniors are empowered to live rich, independent lives within a caring, intentional community.”

Canada’s first cohousing project was WindSong Cohousing built in Langley in 1996, and members of that development are still vibrant today. Compass Cohousing is Langley’s newest and now includes 29 households all wanting to build their lives in this planned collaborative residential living project. The Compass Cohousing community is multigenerational, with young people and families and people who plan to age in place.

“Housing remains a critical priority for many communities, and in the Township of Langley, we’re committed to offering diverse, affordable, and flexible housing solutions,” says Mayor Eric Woodward, Township of Langley. “Compass Cohousing represents an innovative approach to expanding housing options, creating vibrant neighborhoods with excellent access to jobs, transit, and essential amenities.”

Compass Cohousing consists of a variety of studio, one and two-bedroom condo units ranging from 500 square-foot to 1062 square-foot in size, to four-bedroom, 1,500 square-foot townhouse styles.

The shared common house features a large community kitchen and dining area, children’s playroom, lounge, laundry room, reading areas, guest room, workshop, exercise room, and a music room. The shared amenity spaces are what make this residential complex a cohousing project by nature, where residents can cook and eat together, play and enjoy time together, and support one another.

“Lark Group’s core principle has always been about serving our community and building projects that help communities grow and flourish,” says Kirk Fisher, CEO of Lark Group. “We are proud to partner with Compass Cohousing to build their unique and thoughtfully designed community that not only fosters connections, relationships, and sustainable living, but actually redefines what a residential neighbourhood can be.”

Compass Cohousing is located in the picturesque Willoughby neighbourhood of Langley within walking distance to schools, library, recreation, restaurants and shops such as Walmart Supercentre, Save-on-Foods and Costco.

Construction on Compass Cohousing is currently underway with occupancy expected in the fall of 2026.
