CHRISTINE WU – EMBRACING COURAGE AND AUTHENTICITY

BY J.M. LEE

Christine came to Canada from Taiwan as a child, curious and excited about what lay ahead. Her parents immigrated so she could access better opportunities, receive a strong education, and thrive in a supportive environment. That decision continues to shape her life, both personally and professionally.

“From an early age, my parents’ values shaped me,” she says. “They were both hardworking and persistent. They taught me the importance of dedication, perseverance, responsibility, accountability, and respect for everyone.”

Her career began at an investment firm, where she built a solid foundation in financial services. Subsequently, she joined BMO and spent the past 14 years advancing through various roles. Each experience has taught her resilience, personal growth, and staying focused on what matters most.

In managing BMO’s sponsorships and donations for the B.C. and Yukon Region, she collaborates with community organizations that make a real difference, including those in healthcare, education, social services, the arts, and more. She contributes to their work through partnerships and sponsorships, and helps drive meaningful change rooted in collaboration and a shared mindset to help others. “However big or small, the impact we see in the communities we serve makes the work so rewarding. Every little bit counts.”

Over time, Christine learned to build confidence. “It grows when you step outside of your comfort zone, take risks, and believe in your potential—even when the next step isn’t entirely clear.”

She has been fortunate to work with leaders who supported her development and encouraged her to keep learning and evolving. “I try to approach every opportunity with a growth mindset—open to feedback, new challenges, and a genuine desire to improve. Building confidence means your voice matters. Surround yourself with people who uplift and challenge you. Advocate for yourself and others, and speak up!”

Her advice for the next generation of young women is to be courageous. “Open yourselves to new opportunities. You don’t need to have everything figured out—sometimes, the most crucial step is simply being willing to take the next step forward. It’s about embracing uncertainty and trusting in your ability to learn as you go. Every step forward, no matter how small, builds confidence and opens doors to possibilities you may never have imagined. Don’t box yourself in. Don’t think the only way to advance in your career is to move vertically up the corporate ladder. A vertical or lateral career move or a generalist or specialist role—these are all important opportunities to strengthen your skill set and experience.”

Christine believes that feedback is another learning experience that will help improve future performance. “I also encourage everyone to join a committee, accept and learn about different insights, and embrace mentorship as a mentor or a mentee. The growth and networking possibilities, through new and current connections, will be valuable and endless.”

This Mother’s Day, Christine reflects on her mom. “She was, and is, one of the strongest women I know, and I am incredibly proud of her. She leads with strength, grace, and selflessness. Watching her has taught me that leadership isn’t defined by position—it’s reflected in how we care, persevere, and lift others along the way, demonstrating that authentic leadership empowers others while keeping one humble despite success. Her example inspires me to strive for excellence, not only for myself but also for those around me. My mom never took a break, never asked for recognition, and always ensured our family had everything we needed. Her quiet persistence and constant care guide how I approach everything I do—with focus, intention, and a deep sense of responsibility.”

Christine advises, “Women should be bold, curious, and embrace their authenticity. They should focus on the here and now and the next step. They should learn from their experiences and remain true to themselves as they move forward. They should take ownership of their journey and view each experience as an opportunity to learn and grow. And, of course, have fun along the way!”
