You may not have heard of Lucid Motors, a new start-up auto manufacturer based in California, but soon everyone will. Lucid Motors is best known for supplying batteries to Formula E race cars and is now producing their first All-electric sedan that boasts a Tesla-beating electric-only range and over 1,000 Horsepower.
The Lucid sedan features an elegant aerodynamic, aircraft-inspired exterior with an interior space-enhancing cab-forward design. From the thin headlights and taillights to the big aero-styled wheels, it all looks sleek with a very low 0.21 coefficient of drag. It’s more charismatic than most other luxury sedans its size. The Lucid Air price starts at US$77,400 before any government rebates, and there will be three models to choose from:
• Air Touring (US$95,000)
• Air Grand Touring (US$139,000)
• Air Dream (US$169,000) special-edition
The new entry-level Air is expected in mid to late 2022. And best of all, it will be coming to Canada, where pricing is still to be announced. It will compete against premium luxury EVs such as the Tesla Model S. Mercedes-Benz EQS, Audi E-Tron GT, and the Porsche Taycan.
The Lucid Air offers a Tesla beating 836 kilometers of all-electric driving range and as much as 1,111 horsepower. Lucid claims the quickest Air model can complete the quarter-mile in 9.9 seconds.
The entry-level Air features a single electric motor that drives the rear wheels and produces 480 horsepower. The rest of the lineup uses dual electric motors that provide all-wheel drive.
The Touring model generates 650 horsepower, the Grand Touring makes 800, the Dream Edition Range produces 933, and the top-of-the-line Dream Edition Performance model develops a massive 1,111 horsepower.
Next year, a single-motor rear-wheel-drive version will become available, and a trimotor, all-wheel-drive performance version is expected to join the lineup.
According to US EPA estimates, the Air has the most extended range of any electric vehicle currently on the market. The Dream Edition Range model should go for 836 km on a single charge, while the Dream Edition Performance should travel about 748 kilometers. The base model has an estimated driving range of 653 kilometers, matching the Touring model. The Air features a 112.0-kWh battery pack, and DC fast-charging capability said to recoup 482 km of range in just 20 minutes. US Buyers will also enjoy three years of complimentary free, fast charging at Electrify America charging stations.
