A Relationship-Builder, an Academic, and a Change-Maker Joined the Team Delta Voices

Poised to be the first South Asian woman ever elected the Delta School Board, Mita Naidu, is a Director of Development and Communications and has a created a life centered on governance, engagement and equity- three qualities necessary for school board.

WHO IS SHE?

A relationship-builder, an academic, and a change-maker… this mother of two (11 and 15) has joined the political scene for the first time on Team Delta Voices.

Poised to be the first South Asian woman ever elected the Delta School Board, Mita Naidu, is a Director of Development and Communications and has a created a life centered on governance, engagement and equity- three qualities necessary for school board.

With a strong background in sport and dance- she is often asked to speak to youth organizations about engagement, the arts, social justice and volunteerism.

 

HER PLATFORM= A.R.T.S

ADVOCACY:

Mita will advocate for improved tracks and playgrounds for schools. She will also advocate for the voices of marginalized communities– including children in low-wealth families, English language learners, gay and gender-nonconforming youth, students with disabilities and neuro-diverse needs, and immigrant youth.

RELATIONSHIPS:

Mita wants to see thoughtful collaborations and relationships between schools, school board, city, police, community businesses, the province, and community. For her, negotiating these relationships is paramount to a healthy school system in Delta.

TRANSPARENCY:

Public input in the shaping and delivery of educational initiatives and policy, is very important to Mita- as is, improved accountability from trustees.

SUPPORT:

Mita and her team want to see better support for ALL families in Delta, especially families with students with special needs. They recognize that support must extend to educators as well.

HER EXPERIENCE:

Mita has extensive experience on prominent boards: including the Vancouver International Jazz Festival Board; The Vancouver International Children’s Festival; the Cultural Communities Advisory Committee for the City of Vancouver; the Vancouver Asian Heritage Month Society; The Indian Summer Festival; and the Diwali Celebration Society. She was also appointed by Heritage BC & the Royal BC Museum, as a consultant on the “South Asian Canadian Historic Places Project”.

She is the recipient of two BC Arts Council grants, and was also named one of “12 Remarkable Women in Vancouver” by the City of Vancouver and the Vancouver Parks Board in 2012. She holds a BA, MA and MHA from the University of British Columbia.

She is running with two other powerful women: Rhiannon Bennett and Andrea Hilder, on Team Delta Voices.
