Western Community College (WCC) is marking the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day with a commitment that extends beyond September 30, advancing Indigenous economic reconciliation through education, fully funded scholarships, curriculum development and meaningful pathways to employment.
As a private post-secondary educational institution, WCC recognizes that education is a foundation for economic development. By connecting industry needs with curriculum development, the College is working to ensure Indigenous students have access to the skills, training and opportunities needed to participate fully in Canada’s economy.
“Truth and Reconciliation is not simply about recognizing one day on the calendar. It is about the meaningful actions we take throughout the year to create opportunities, remove barriers and build stronger relationships with Indigenous communities,” said Gurpal Dhaliwal, President of Western Community College. “We are proud to have five Indigenous students begin their studies this term with their tuition fully funded by WCC. Through education, industry partnerships and employment-focused training, we are committed to supporting Indigenous learners in achieving their personal and professional goals.”
Turning Reconciliation into Meaningful Action
WCC is advancing several initiatives to strengthen Indigenous education, awareness and economic participation:
- Indigenous Student Scholarships: Five Indigenous students have commenced their studies this term with their tuition fully funded by Western Community College.
- Indigenous Education Across the Curriculum: WCC is updating 20 course outlines to incorporate Indigenous history and strengthen students’ understanding of Truth and Reconciliation.
- Truth and Reconciliation Student Information Session: WCC will host an educational session featuring keynote speaker Dr. John Belhumeur, with interactive activities designed to encourage student engagement, learning and reflection.
- Orange Shirt Day Participation: Students, faculty and staff are encouraged to wear orange on September 29, 2026, to recognize the importance of Truth and Reconciliation. Orange T-shirts will also be awarded to students participating in educational activities.
- Year-Round Indigenous Engagement: WCC is exploring additional opportunities to strengthen Indigenous partnerships, cultural awareness and educational initiatives throughout the year.
“Education drives economic development, and economic reconciliation must be part of that equation,” said Anita Huberman, Board Chair of Western Community College. “When we connect industry needs with curriculum development, we create pathways to employment, financial independence and economic participation. Our responsibility is to ensure that Indigenous students have meaningful opportunities to succeed and that every single person matters in this economy. Reconciliation must translate into action, opportunity and lasting economic inclusion. September 30 is a day for remembrance, reflection and learning. At Western Community College, it is also a reminder that the work of reconciliation must continue every day.”
