As Jordan prepares for a pivotal FIFA World Cup match against Algeria, National Team Manager Khalil Gharios says the squad is embracing both the privilege and responsibility of representing the country on football’s biggest stage.

In an exclusive interview for Road to FIFA World Cup 2026, Gharios reflected on Jordan’s historic qualification for its first-ever FIFA World Cup, describing the achievement as a moment that has united an entire nation.

“Ever since we knew we had qualified, we knew we were witnessing history,” Gharios said. “There’s a great sense of joy, relief and pride. It’s difficult to put into words.”

A lifelong football fan, Gharios said reaching the World Cup with his own country is something he once only dreamed about while watching the tournament as a child.

“We’re not here just to participate,” he said. “We’re here to compete.”

Beyond football, Gharios believes Jordan’s appearance on the world stage offers an opportunity to introduce millions of viewers to the country’s culture and people.

“We want people to know how hospitable Jordanians are, how welcoming we are and how much we love this sport,” he said. “No matter how big or small your nation is, nothing is impossible.”

He also hopes Jordan’s journey inspires the next generation of footballers.

“Jordan did not qualify by accident,” he said. “Years of hard work from players, coaches and the federation brought us here. I hope young Jordanians watching realize that one day they can also wear their country’s flag on the biggest stage.”

Throughout qualification and now at the World Cup, Jordan’s supporters have continued to travel across continents to cheer on their team.

“No matter where we play, our fans are there,” Gharios said. “We love them very much and we’re grateful for the incredible support they’ve shown us.”

Reflecting on the FIFA World Cup itself, Gharios said football has a unique ability to unite people regardless of nationality or background.

“People from countries who have never met before become friends. They dance together, share music and food. Football brings people together, even during difficult times.”

As Jordan continues its historic World Cup campaign, Gharios says the team remains focused, proud and determined to continue representing the nation with pride.

“We’re very fortunate to be here, and we’re ready for everything that comes next.”
