SURREY, BC — On Saturday, March 28, 2026, Surrey City Hall hosted the official launch of the 9th annual Sikh Heritage Month, bringing together community leaders, elected officials, and residents to celebrate a legacy deeply woven into British Columbia’s story. This year’s theme, “Daya” (compassion), reflects one of the core pillars of Sikhism: a commitment not only to empathy, but to taking action to ease the suffering of others.

Presenting at this launch event was, British Columbia’s Attorney General, Niki Sharma, Minister of Post-Secondary Education and Future Skills, Jesse Sunner and Parliamentary Secretary of Anti-Racism and Mental Health and Addiction Amna Shah and Parliamentary Secretary of Surrey Infrastructure Garry Begg. Minister Sunner addressed the audience on behalf of the BC Government and underscored the importance of recognizing Sikh contributions and advancing inclusive communities across the province.

Sikh Heritage BC began as a volunteer-led initiative by students from Simon Fraser University and University of British Columbia, officially becoming a non-profit in 2018. What started with five events has since grown into a dynamic, province-wide movement, hosting numerous programs that highlight the enduring contributions of Sikh Canadians. Today, the organization continues to expand its impact, including offering scholarships that invest in and uplift future generations.

The Province of British Columbia has also issued an official proclamation recognizing Sikh Heritage Month, affirming that “the government of British Columbia recognizes the important contributions that Sikhs have made and continue to make to the province’s social, economic, political and cultural fabric.” The proclamation further emphasizes that Sikh Heritage Month serves as a vital opportunity to celebrate the aspirations of Sikh communities while educating future generations about this rich and diverse heritage.
