Abbotsford Regional Hospital and Cancer Centre Now Offers Internal Cardiac Defibrillator Procedures, Improving Access and Reducing Wait Times throughout Fraser East

Internal cardiac defibrillator (ICD) implantation procedures are now available on-site at Abbotsford Regional Hospital and Cancer Centre.

Internal cardiac defibrillator (ICD) implantation procedures are now available on-site at Abbotsford Regional Hospital and Cancer Centre. An ICD is a small battery-powered device implanted in the chest that helps prevents sudden cardiac death in patients with serious heart rhythm. Having the procedure now available in the Fraser Valley means patients don’t have to travel to other sites to have their ICD’s implanted.

Led by Dr. Saman Rezazadeh, this expansion of the cardiac program builds on the successful launch of pacemaker procedures in 2023.

“We’re proud to offer this advanced procedure right here in Abbotsford,” said Dr. Rezazadeh. “It’s a meaningful step forward for our patients and their families.”

The launch was a team effort. Cardiology and Surgical Program staff worked together to align workflows, prepare equipment and coordinate peri-operative support. Their collaboration helped ensure a smooth rollout and seamless integration with regional cardiac care pathways.

“This ICD implantation service reflects our commitment to proving comprehensive, high-quality cardiac care within our own community. By expanding access to ICD implantation, we are ensuring that patients receive timely and specialized treatment close to home,” says Dr. David Liu, site medical director.

This milestone supports Fraser Health’s broader goal of expanding access to specialized services throughout the region. It also offers a model for how multidisciplinary teams can work together to improve care delivery.
