WATERLOO, ON – March 14, 2019 — Twentieth Century Fox and Franklin Entertainment are pleased to announce the highly-anticipated theatrical release of BREAKTHROUGH to Canadian theatres on April 17, 2019. Filmed in Winnipeg, BREAKTHROUGH is based on the miraculous true story of John Smith, stars Chrissy Metz (This Is Us) and Topher Grace (SPIDER-MAN 3), is produced by DeVon Franklin (MIRACLES FROM HEAVEN), and directed by Roxann Dawson (House of Cards).
With trailer viewers now exceeding 100,000,000, BREAKTHROUGH is quickly becoming one of the most highly-anticipated faith films of the year presenting an enthralling reminder for audiences that faith and love can create a mountain of hope – and sometimes even a miracle.
In theatres just in time for Easter, the film stars Metz as Joyce Smith, the mother of 14-year-old John Smith who falls through an icy Missouri lake – leaving him trapped for 15 minutes. When John is rescued and without a pulse for 43 minutes, all hope seems lost, but Joyce refuses to give up hope for her son’s life.
Despite doctors who had no hope, case history and scientific prediction, Joyce refuses to give up on believing for her son’s healing. Her steadfast belief inspired the family’s community, school and church to continue to pray for John’s recovery – eventually leading to a miraculous story.
“This beautiful, incredible true story of the Smith family [is] an amazing story about the power of prayer and the power of love,” said Metz. “When I read the script, I was so moved by Joyce’s conviction in her faith and [knew] that this was an incredible story that people need to hear about. If I could be a small part of it, and sort of giving back in a way that I feel that has been given so much to me through my faith, that it would be such a gift and it really has been.”
The film is based on the book The Impossible by Joyce Smith and is being accompanied by companion resource Breakthrough to Your Miracle by Jason Noble.
“The film is such a visual representation of what God did and I’m very excited for people to get to see the miracle first-hand,” said Noble. “I hope viewers find hope, but I also think there could be some healing God does through the film. There are so many different themes woven throughout BREAKTHROUGH and it’s amazing to hear people’s stories after they’ve seen it – stories of how God has touched them in profound ways.”
Adapted for the screen by Grant Nieporte (SEVEN POUNDS), executively produced by Stephen Curry and Sammy Rodriguez, BREAKTHROUGH will release in theatres nationwide on April 17.
