The MINI John Cooper Works is an exceptionally high-performance version of the venerable Mini (First generations spelled in lowercase). First introduced in 1956—yes, that was 65 years ago! The unique loveable looks, stellar go-kart-like handling, and high fun quotient are still thrilling people decades later. While standard MINIs make do with a 1.5-litre turbo-three 134 horsepower engine or a 2.0L turbo-four producing 189 hp and 206 lb-ft of torque, the top dog John Cooper Works (JCW) version is on steroids. It has a 2.0L engine to make 228 hp and 235 lb-ft of torque and a performance six-speed manual or eight-speed automatic transmission. It can run 0—to 100 km/h in a quick 6.1 seconds.
Other performance upgrades include big Brembo brakes, torque vectoring, an aero kit, active dampers, and stiffer suspension. Three driving modes can adjust throttle parameters and performance. A six-speed manual transmission is standard fare with “active engine speed adaptation,” which rev-matches on downshifting. In contrast, an eight-speed automatic transmission features paddle shifters and a launch control function.
The MINI Cooper has a starting price of $33,740. The top John Cooper Works starts at $48,590. Freight and PDI is $2,245. The JCW IS available in either a three-door hardtop or a convertible with optional paint stripe packages, LED headlights, front fog lights, rain-sensing wipers, heated and power-adjustable side mirrors, and a rear spoiler.
Inside, you get a JCW-specific steering wheel and shift lever. Many vehicle customization possibilities are common today but are welcome with standard equipment such as panorama moonroof, parking sensors, and Comfort Access keyless entry. All Mini JCWs have an 8.8-inch infotainment display with SiriusXM satellite radio, a six-speaker stereo, Bluetooth phone, and streaming audio. The list of optional equipment includes a premium Harman/Kardon sound system, in-dash navigation, Apple CarPlay smartphone integration, and wireless charging for your devices.
The JCW comes with driver-assistance features such as Standard automated emergency braking, Standard lane-departure warning, and Available adaptive cruise control. Optional features include navigation, premium sound head-up display, driver assistance technology, active cruise control, and automatic parking assist.
There is a fabulous trademark circular dash display with an optional 8.8-inch touchscreen, and there are all sorts of rad graphics and fantastic details in and around the dash and cabin that have you smiling. The signature toggle switches and quaint details add to the MINI ambiance. Uniformly, the JCW has an incredible feeling of quality and refinement. Suitable materials, a nice tactile feel to the controls and surfaces, and a premium look for everything are hallmarks.
On the road, the JCW is all business, being a complete blast to drive with the 2.0-liter turbo engine offering excellent power delivery, speed, and power. The driving modes can adjust the optional adaptive dampers, making for a stiffer, more nuanced sport-tuned ride in Sport mode. Gear shifting is fast courtesy of the eight-speed auto gearbox on our tester. You can also use the paddle shifters if you want the feel of a manual. Upshifts come quickly from the excellent automatic, holding the gears until much higher in the rev range. Driving dynamics are lovely, the quick spooling of the turbo unit provides excellent acceleration at highway speeds, and the exhaust note and quick shifts add addictive high notes to the driving experience. The steering is quick and accurate, while the four-piston fixed-caliper Brembo brakes up front and single-piston calipers in the rear mean-braking—are sharp and effective. There is also an Electronic Brakeforce Distribution and Cornering Brake Control for reasonable control.
The downsides are few. The ride is harsh and choppy, thanks to stiff suspension and tall tires. Adults’ cabin space in the rear will feel cramped, and cargo capacity is scarce. Nevertheless, the JCW is highly refined, a joy to own, and a drive premium sports compact that will make you smile daily. Purists will, of course, opt for the six-speed manual transmission that delivers the most driving thrills.
