Susan’s journey began with a passion for advocating for children’s rights, ultimately leading her to become a lawyer. She co-founded South Asians Against Child Abuse—hoping to create more awareness and active involvement against cruelty to children and to positively transform the community.

“Recently, I had the great privilege of authoring a multi-award-winning children’s book,” Susan reveals. “Children Who Dance in the Rain (available June 15th, 2023 on Amazon and at Chapters-Indigo bookstores) is a thought-provoking tale of a young girl’s journey to India. The story sheds light on the lifestyle of the privileged, highlighting vast global disparities, and exposes the challenging living conditions faced by many children worldwide. Additionally, it delves into our unhealthy attachment to material possessions and technology.”

Children Who Dance in the Rain touches on the challenges and triumphs of underprivileged children in India. 100% of net proceeds from every fourth copy purchased goes to charities including Save The Children, GiveWell, and Bright Sparks School in Mohali, India.

“As a woman in a leadership role I embrace the importance of acknowledging our interconnectedness and shared human experiences,” Susan conveys with profound hope. “My purpose is to raise awareness and foster unity amongst people, as we recognize that our individual liberation intrinsically links to one another— without reservations or exceptions. Children are the future of our planet, and if we don’t care for them, love them, and raise them up on a higher pedestal, we will end up with a world full of hostility, chaos, and broken hearts. Thinking about these children, I can’t help but recall how my mother cared for me and showered me with unconditional love, something that I will cherish for the rest of my life. Two of the most profound influences in my life are my mother and the children I have been advocating for for all these years, which includes my own children.”

Scaling back her legal career to explore motherhood, Susan pursued her dream of writing a book. Raising awareness about child abuse and neglect within the South Asian community was a big step. Its themes are universal and expound on the extremes of the human condition. This experience has ignited her sense of purpose and determination to positively affect the lives of underprivileged children and adult survivors of childhood abuse. As a result, she has experienced significant personal growth and discovered an empowering sense of confidence.

“My leadership confidence stems from a firm belief in a higher purpose beyond daily routines,” she clarifies. “I’m driven to speak up for marginalized voices and remain resilient and determined to do this in all my work. It’s important that I use my voice to make a positive impact, in doing so I hope to contribute to the betterment of humankind.”

“It’s crucial not to dismiss gender bias and the difficulties women face when leading men or when they are vying for equal positions and equal pay. Factors like parental leave and family responsibilities can affect career growth in the legal profession.”

As a mentor to aspiring female lawyers, Susan seeks those committed to championing others’ rights and making a meaningful difference in the world rather than focusing solely on monetary gains.

“Helping women reach prominent roles involves building networks, finding mentors, showcasing achievements, speaking up, improving leadership skills, and seeking growth opportunities,” she elaborates. “Aspiring female leaders should be brave, take calculated risks, bounce back from setbacks, and be prepared for or expect uncertainty.”

As a leader, Susan sets the tone for the team by highlighting the importance of working together and appreciating each persons skills. As a lawyer, leader, or colleague, she advocates for open communication, inclusivity, mutual respect, listening, and recognizing everyone’s worth.

“Challenges that arise when leading men may involve addressing biases and navigating diverse expectations,” she reflects. “It’s crucial not to dismiss gender bias and the difficulties women face when leading men or when they are vying for equal positions and equal pay. Having read many books on time management, Susan learned to set boundaries, prioritize tasks, and effectively manage time. It’s a continuous journey; for instance, after putting her babies to bed, she works on tasks to meet deadlines and ensure quality time with her husband.
