Shiamak’s Winter Funk 2018 a Huge Success For Parents and Students

More than 300 students paid tribute to their favourite Bollywood stars amidst award ceremonies and performances by local celebrities.

Surrey, BC – BC’s biggest Bollywood dance academy, SHIAMAK Vancouver celebrated a glamorous night of Bollywood dance, with hundreds of students of all ages taking to the stage at Winter Funk 2018: The Awards Show on December 1.

The event was headlined by star performers Kanika Sasan and Gaurav Shah, local celebrities who performed specially choreographed pieces backed up by the SHIAMAK Vancouver Dance team.

More than 300 students spent the last three months preparing for the show, and the stage was filled with colourful costumes — many of them handmade by the classes themselves. The theme of the night was “the Awards Show”, and each class had prepared an homage to their favourite Bollywood star, taking inspiration from their most famous movies, songs, and steps.

SHIAMAK Vancouver was also proud to present several awards to important stalwarts of Vancouver’s dance community: Pamela Rosa of Harbour Dance Centre; Dylan Steyns of the North Shore Academy of Dance; Gopi Sian of South Asian Arts; and Chan Hon Goh of Goh Ballet. It was lovely to see members of the dance community come together to honour each other’s art and passion, and all the award winners thanked SHIAMAK Vancouver for the opportunity.

The SHIAMAK Vancouver Dance Team and ShowKids put on a number of spectacular performances. The VICTORY Arts Foundation Dance Team — comprising of students of all backgrounds and abilities from the Down Syndrome Research Foundation, North Shore ConneXions, and the Developmental Disabilities Foundation — gave a beautiful and heartwarming presentation as well.
