COQUITLAM – BC Liberal Leader Andrew Wilkinson and Joan Isaacs, MLA for Coquitlam-Burke Mountain have affirmed their commitment to fund a new Burke Mountain Middle/Secondary School.

“I promised my support and unwavering commitment to see the construction of new schools on Burke Mountain and I am thrilled to now have Andrew Wilkinson’s commitment to fund the Burke Mountain Middle/Secondary School,” said Isaacs. “The election promise by John Horgan and Rob Fleming in April 2017 to fast track the construction of this school is long overdue. The NDP continues to add new concept requirements, which has caused undue delays and is denying Burke Mountain students the opportunity to attend a school in their neighbourhood.”

All Coquitlam residents will benefit from this joint partnership between the City of Coquitlam and School District #43. The agreement provides for community access to school amenities, including a sports field and is a fantastic example of collaboration that enhances the efficiency of multi-use spaces.

“Today’s announcement comes after years of advocating for Burke Mountain schools to be built and supporting the School District, parents and students in bringing this project to fruition,” said Isaacs. “I have repeatedly pushed Rob Fleming to commit to a timeline when the construction of this school will begin and he’s repeatedly made excuses. Andrew’s commitments can be trusted — he is guaranteeing this school will be built — and that’s good news for everyone in Coquitlam.”

The previous BC Liberal government invested more than $4.5 billion in capital funding for schools around British Columbia since 2001, completing more than 190 additional schools and almost 400 school enhancement projects.
