In what promises to become an annual signature event for Surrey, the Organizing Committee of Run Surrey Run has released details of its 5K/10K Run/Walk to be held in the Downtown Surrey Central City area on June 7 this year. The event is expected to draw over 2000 participants who will navigate a route that will take them past landmarks like SFU, City Hall and KPU. It will commence and end on the grassy fields of Holland Park.

The inspiration for this event is local entrepreneur and community activist Gurjinder Bhurji who, after experiencing life threatening medical challenges during the birth of her fourth child, decided to focus on her health and fitness by running through her local neighbourhood and eventually all over Surrey. For over two years she has been assembling a team of like-minded people to organize the walk/run while inviting sponsors to contribute to make it a truly memorable event.

“Our vision for this endeavour is to promote an active lifestyle with a focus on sustainability and inclusiveness. We look forward to making this fun-filled event a must-do for the entire family every year,” said Bhurji. “We can all leave a lasting legacy through participation in this inaugural annual event. We encourage everyone, no matter how fast or slow you are, to grab your runners and ‘Run Surrey Run’.”

This vision is fully supported by the City of Surrey. We are proud to announce Royal Bank of Canada as our official community partner, along with the support from a host of local community businesses and groups.

Run Surrey Run will be presented under the auspices of the Balsar Community Foundation – a not-for-profit registered society with directors who have a long association and experience with sustainability and charitable fund raisers. “This will be an environmentally friendly event with attention paid to proper disposal of waste and enlightened use of materials that are bio-degradable,” concluded Balsar Board Chair Sarj Sabharwal.
