2020 Mercedes-Benz A250: New Premium Hatch Back Is the New Benchmark

The A250 hatchback is the entry-level Mercedes-Benz. It is the brands smallest and most affordable offering, but does not compromise on quality. The A-Class, available in both a four-door hatchback and sedan,   and is aimed at the sporty youth market of the premium compact segment. Smart and sharp looking, the A250 has a long hood for a hatchback with nicely delineated front air intakes, aggressive side strakes, and dramatic headlights finish off the look. The sleek profile delivers an aerodynamics drag coefficient of 0.25, the lowest in its class Mercedes-Benz say. The A Class 250 is powered by a 2.0L inline-four with 221 horsepower and 258 lb.-ft. of torque.   7-speed dual clutch transmission.

The A-Class   has a very high quality cabin, and high tech features. If Mercedes is targeting the youth market they will succeed here as the A-Class is well set. I like the use of real aluminum trim, satin metal controls and the sleek attention to detail on some things as the rotary vents and the fit and finish.   I would highly recommend the larger infotainment screens that spread across the driver cockpit screen – they comprise two slim sleek flat screen 10.25″ displays, placed together instead of the traditional round analogue displays in front of the steering wheel, This wrap around MBUX system is truly amazing everything is digital and is part of the “Premium Package” that also includes blind spot assist, rear cross traffic alert, wireless phone charging, and 64-colour interior ambient lighting.   The MBUX system can be operated by four different ways: via steering wheel controls and touch sensitive button which you can scroll or swipe across. There is also a track pad on the centre console.  However, the most effective and most impressive mode interface with the MBUX system is by voice command. I’ve tried this feature recently on a Mercedes A220 sedan, and it works incredibly well simply saying “Mercedes” calls up a Siri-type assistant who asks how it can help. I changed radio stations, turned on heated seats and steering wheel and adjusted temperature all by voice command.

The cabin high-end look is complimented by a light, airy spacious rear cabin with fairly comfortable seats and 370 litres of cargo space and a maximum of 1,210 litres of space if you fold down the rear seats flat.

On the road, the A Class’s turbocharged inline-four is a strong willing unit and produces its 221 hp and 258 lb-ft torque in a smooth unruffled fashion. The A 250 4MATIC sprint from 0-100 km/h in 6.2 seconds. The seven-speed dual-clutch transmission is a fast, well integrated unit that also works well in manual mode allowing for quick shifts, especially when working the shift paddles.  Sport mode makes the transmission more dynamically responsive without affecting the fluidity of the shifting Compared to previous model, there is much better cornering, and smooth precise acceleration   The chassis also feels more rigid and the steering more responsive. The ride is also less noisy and better refined.  Braking is good, with a nice firm pedal action… Fuel economy is rated at (City / Highway / Combined) L/100km: 9.9 / 7.0 / 8.6.

Top highlights are the killer interior, the smooth styling, great engine an nd transmission combination.  Of course the legendary Mercedes -Benz engineering, quality and reliability says it all really.

To sum up, the Mercedes A250 is an all-around great, competent car. It’s fast, agile, comfortable, and well-equipped. It is a fitting replacement for previous A-Class generations I have driven in Europe.  . It can get expensive with all the technology bells and whistles, but those are the things that will add value to the car and make for a better ownership and driving experience in my opinion. The MBUX system and the twin screen option is must if you o pull the trigger on A-Class.  Top highlights are the killer interior, the smooth styling, great engine an nd transmission combination.  Of course the legendary Mercedes Benz engineering, quality and reliability says it all really.
