Continuing great news for a wagon and Mercedes-Benz aficionados. For 2018, the Mercedes-Benz C300 4Matic model arrives in a wagon format for more versatility. In the flesh, the C 300 4MATIC Wagon does look nice, with its aggressive stance and dramatic side profile. Of course, the familiar three-pointed star grille let everyone know you are somewhat discerning. Indeed, the C-300 is a suitably expensive and imposing looking car from all angles. As a reminder, the C-Class is positioned above the entry-level Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class and just below the E-Class and S-Class sedans. However, the popular C-Class range does offer a very generous equipment list which provides an impressive selection of driver aids, safety features as well as the large and practical rear cargo hatch. For Canada, the C-300 wagon boasts a new 2-liter, four-cylinder turbocharged engine producing 241 hp, and mated to a new 9-speed automatic. Mercedes’ excellent 4Matic All-Wheel drive is also an option on this model.
We tested a 2018 model with the following equipment and options: Base Price $46,000, outfitted with the Premium Package $5,000, Premium Plus Package $2,300, Selenite Grey metallic paint, $890, AMG 18” 5-Spoke Wheels. The interior trim comprised of Black ARTICO Leather Upholstery, Dark Ash Wood Trim (Open-Pore) $250 Heated Steering Wheel $250, SiriusXM® Satellite Radio $475m Dark Ash Open Pore Wood Trim $250. Total price as tested $56,865 plus taxes and fees. Our tester also came with the 4Matic All-wheel Drive system.
Interior wise, the C-Class a bright interior, all serious looking, discreet, robust and in good taste. For the driver, there is a good range of adjustability to the C-Class Estate’s steering wheel and the seats driving position, with electric height, backrest and lumbar adjustment fitted as standard to all models, the dash is ergonomically excellent. Comfortable, and switchgear is sensibly laid-out, including the high-level infotainment COMAND controls to the driver’s right. Where a small, clickable touchpad and rotary dial between the front seats can be used to access functions via the center dash display screen.
There are also additional controls on the steering wheel. Overall, it is hard to fault the interior, the plastics, metal trim and other textiles are of the highest quality and fit and finish is uniformly good with excellent craftsmanship. From the available audiophile Burmester® sound system to the audio and touchpad COMAND navigation, the controls and function access is easy and intuitive to use. Both passenger and driver room is excellent, the high waist of the C-Class wagon offers a cocoon-like feeling of safety, visibility is superb, while a rear camera makes parking easy. The rear cabin is also well appointed and roomy, with rear seats that fold down to offer excellent cargo room, accessed on our tester via a power tailgate.
On the road, the turbocharged C 300 4MATIC can make the 0-100 in just 6.1 seconds. Now that’s incredibly impressive given the size of this car! Revised engine technology including Direct Injection and multi-spark ignition can self-tune in milliseconds, to maximize power. The engine offers effortless power providing 241 horsepower with 273 lb-ft of torque. It is a remarkably responsive and powerful car. Concerning the driving experience, you can also adjust the C-300’s on-road driving characteristics via the DYNAMIC SELECT that allows either a Sports mode or Eco setting, depending on driver preference.
The selective-damping multilink suspension offers a firm, stable, and well-controlled ride and handling over a variety of road surface and bends. The All-Wheel Drive 4MATIC system provides excellent traction in hard starts and on a slippery road. Overall, the C-300 wagon is a good compromise offering a more comfort-orientated, rich, relaxed driving experience, rather than a rougher sport orientated dynamic. For those needing a high-quality premium wagon, look no further. Mercedes-Benz quality all the way.
