The ATS was designed with a mission, namely to become a player in the high stakes compact luxury sports sedan segment. This is an arena where benchmark sports sedan as the BMW -3 Series, the Audi A4, and Mercedes-Benz C-Class. Infiniti and Lexus play. However the ATS looks like a sure-fire winner. For starters it is not “overdesigned” with definite Cadillac design language, but not so left field that it looks strange.
Based on an all-new rear-wheel-drive platform, the ATS starts at $35,195 for the 202-hp/191 lb-th torque 2.5L model. The uprated 2 litre Turbocharged version weighs in $36,985 2.0L and has 272 hp/260 lb-th. Top dog is the 3.6L V6 version with 321 hp and 275 lb-th torque. Transmission and drive train systems include a six-speed automatic with manual shift as standard, or a six-speed manual transmission for the rearwheel- drive 2.0L Turbo model rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive is available, but not an option on the 2.5 liter model. The interior is very impressive with trademark innovative classic Cadillac design. The rich leather upholstery looks warm inviting and the fit, feel of the controls, seating and door surfaces is also high quality. Optional trim options are wood, carbon fibre, gloss black and an interesting looking “oil rubbed” bronze look.

The seats are plush, comfortable and electrically adjustable The ATS cabin feel snug and driver and front seat passenger room is good although the rear quarters feel tighter. Those rear seats do fold 60/40 and include a ski pass-through to the generous trunk.
On the road it is very easy to understand why the ATS won Luxury Car category in (AJAC) 2013 Canadian Car of the Year program and 2013 North American Car of the Year! The ATS is simply outstanding with exemplary acceleration, handling, braking Add all-wheel drive to the mix and the ATS c is imply world class.
One of the key attributes is the near perfect 50/50 front/rear weight distribution for superb balance and handling dynamics. Also important is the three drive modes which are available via a driver operated button on the console. The big brakes and on the luxury model as standard Brembo high performance front brakes provide excellent stopping power and ensure well- modulated, fade resistant halts with complete confidence. Meanwhile the sport- tuned new five-link independent rear suspension keep the car solidly planted and responsive to steering inputs and quick lateral directional changes.
The ride and drive experience is apparent on a variety of road surfaces. Smooth highways show off the tremendous acceleration, flexible torque and smooth power plants.
To sum up, the Cadillac ATS is a tremendously impressive sports sedan that is equally at home carving winding twisty roads, jousting in the cut and thrust of the urban grind or simply enjoying on the open road. Other key attributes include the sleek not overachieving looks, light weight, luxury equipment level and overall excellent versatile performance levels. So how does it compare to the benchmark German competition?
