Mercedes-Benz to launch new “EQ” Electric Vehicle Range

Mercedes-Benz is planning its own distinct line of electric vehicles, in a direct challenge to both BMW and Tesla Motors Inc. The move comes as the premium German automaker eyes the growing acceptance and demand for electric vehicle technology as battery range and consumer hesitance to adopt electric vehicles is on the upswing. With a huge demand for Tesla’s products X and robust sales of BMWs new i3 all –electric city car, Mercedes-Benz showed off it first look Generation EQ concept at the 2016 Paris auto show in September. EQ – named for “electric intelligence,” the very first concept of the lineup takes the form of a crossover using an architecture developed specifically for battery-electric models and incorporating all-wheel drive. The EQ concept offers a range of 310 miles on a full charge and can sprint to 62 mph in under five seconds, Mercedes says. The concept produces up to 402 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque; via two electric motors on the front and rear axles powered from a battery integrated deep into the floor and positioned between the two axles. Mercedes will start selling its electric line-up before the end of the decade. Mercedes already has its Smart car brand and electric versions will also build up that sub-brand. Also, Mercedes’ have a vision for an expensive, premium hi performance all-electric coupe to serve as the brand ambassador car – much like BMWs i8. The first of the new electric autos it is speculated will be produced at the company’s factory in Bremen, Germany. Canadian pricing and availability are to be announced.
