Twenty years ago, Gurpreet Arneja and Vineet Taneja had a conversation over lunch about paneer, the now famous (but little known back then) Indian cheese, and the time-consuming task of making it. Little did they know that two decades from now, they’d be running the largest Indian dairy in North America, specializing in paneer, appetizers and desserts, right here in Surrey!

After that initial conversation, the brainstorming sessions continued, the market research showed a gap in the market, and a educational trip was planned to India. They took a crash course on Indian dairy products – with a focus on paneer, and returned home with wealthy of knowledge and practical skills. On May 28, 1998, Nanak Foods was officially launched.

Over their 20 years in business Nanak has grown to include ghee, desserts, and ready appetizers, and they are now shipping all over the world including the United States, Japan, and Singapore. That’s a Surrey success story if we ever heard one!

As the company has grown, so did its commitment to social responsibility.  Since 2004, Raj Arneja has directed Nanak Foods’ philanthropic, community and social obligations. Today, she has made Nanak Foods an exemplary community leader – a socially responsible company supporting a diverse range of arts and culture initiatives both here at home and across the globe.

In honour of their 20th’s anniversary, Nanak’s is giving back to the community and helping those that are less fortunate. Over the summer of 2018, Nanak Foods will run a global initiative to donate various food items to food banks in cities where their product are available, valued at $100,000. These food donations will be distributed to local food banks without any costs to the recipients.

What’s next for Nanak Foods? This summer they’ll open their second paneer factory,  across the border in Bellingham, Washington. What began as a dream shared by two people is now a reality for more than 200 employees and their families.
